Justification of the 5 Why’s
For our train build project, we used the 5 Why’s to find out why we couldn’t fit enough passengers. It worked well because it helped us dig deeper instead of stopping at the obvious problem.
What we found:
Too much space was used for luggage.
This was because our design was based on old research.
We didn’t update the data or check if it was still accurate.
We didn’t have a system to keep it up to date.
By breaking it down, we saw that the real issue wasn’t just luggage space — it was the lack of up-to-date info and a plan to keep it current.
How effective it was:
Simple, quick, and clear.
Stopped us from jumping to redesign without fixing the real cause.
Weakness: relies on asking good questions and having the right people in the room.
What we’d do differently next time:
Still use the 5 Why’s (or Fishbone), but involve more team members from different areas.
Back it up with fresh research and real customer data.
Set up a system to keep info updated so we don’t repeat the same mistake.
