I am from a traumatic background,
I am from a room full of motherless children,
Till white people came and took me away,
I am from shared rooms and loud noises,
From strangers to loving relationship of seven siblings,
I am from the incessant drama of five sisters,
To the picking of two older brothers
Living room football and Saturday morning TV,
I am from the feel of unknown love,
To the best family I could ever wish for,
I am from ten years away on foreign soil,
I am from the distinct smell of tobacco,
To the screaming of highways right next to my house,
I am from 13-hour flights to and fro different countries,
Till my parents pulled the plug,
I am from making new friends,
Wondering if I belong,
I am from being anxious about my ethnicity,
From feeling peer pressure making me joke about my race just to fit in,
I am from the knowledge of God’s love for me,
To knowing that I have nothing to prove to anyone,
I am from knowing that I have a whole life ahead of me,
And that is where I’m from
